HAVANA, May 27 (Xinhua) – Scholars from China and Cuba gathered in Havana to discuss the construction of a Community with Shared Future as a path to address the challenges currently facing humanity.

Held at the School of Communication at the University of Havana, the First International Seminar on the Community with Shared Future brought together academics from both countries, who exchanged views on the need to develop concepts that practically benefit the Global South.

A Community with Shared Future is, first of all, based on theories, thought, relations, and cooperation,” said Jorge Legañoa, Vice President of Cuba’s Institute of Information and Social Communication, in an interview with Xinhua, highlighting the seminar’s significance.

The journalist also stressed that “we are all facing the same challenges—climate change, economic crisis, and multiple international crises,” noting that such shared concerns form a foundation for unity.

Legañoa emphasized the importance of such exchanges with China, which he described as “a decades-long ally in Cuba’s sociopolitical process.”

We are witnessing the materialization of actions that advance international cooperation—not just between two nations, but between a giant, economically and socially speaking, with its unique model of development and socialism with Chinese characteristics, and the Latin American and Caribbean region,” he said.

His remarks resonated with the presentations given by Professors Li Huailiang and Zhang Yanqiu, Dean and Vice Dean, respectively, of the Institute for a Community with Shared Future at the Communication University of China. Both scholars agreed on the need to build a shared platform to counter Western hegemony and challenge the dominance of hegemonic discourse.

The Community with Shared Future offers an alternative to the hegemonic power of the United States,” said Olga González, Deputy Director of the Center for Hemispheric and United States Studies.

That view, framed from an economic perspective, was echoed by economist Gladys Hernández, Head of the Department of International Finance at the Center for Research on the World Economy.

Similarly, academic Ruvislei González of the Center for International Policy Research traced the evolution of the concept, noting that it does not stem from a unilateral stance, but rather reflects a recognition of the complex global reality and a win-win approach.

Yorbelis Rosell, Deputy Coordinator of the Latin American Association of Asian and African Studies (ALADAA) in Cuba, highlighted the deep-rooted cultural ties between China and the Caribbean island, where the first Chinese laborers arrived 174 years ago, leaving a lasting legacy.

Other professors participated in discussions on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic training in the field of communication, addressing both lesson preparation and teaching planning. The scholars also exchanged views on ethics and transparency in the use of AI, a digital tool in which China is seen as a global leader in development.
